Ning Zhang's inspiration for City Archipelago came from the need for green infrastructure in urban areas. Recognizing the potential of ecology as a catalyst for urban transformation, Zhang designed the project to manage storm floods and enhance the experience of city dwellers. The result is a series of urban islands where water and greenery play a central role, offering a refreshing contrast to the concrete and steel of traditional cityscapes.
What sets City Archipelago apart is its ability to attract both locals and entrepreneurs. Zhang's design offers a unique blend of office, residential, and digital innovation spaces, maintaining the vitality of the streets while providing a balance between economic development and open space. This blend of functionality and aesthetics makes the project a model for future urban design initiatives.
The realization of City Archipelago involved careful planning and innovative use of technology. Business service facilities were strategically placed to provide a buffer against noise and visual distractions, optimizing the biophilic experience. The project, which spans 15 hectares, is located in Zhenru Subcenter, Putuo District, Shanghai. It started in March 2021 and was completed in August 2021, with construction currently in full swing.
The design process involved overcoming several challenges. Key among these was the need to manage storm floods and improve the citizen experience. Zhang's solution was to use water and greenery as key elements of the urban islands, creating a green infrastructure that not only addressed these challenges but also transformed the urban brownfield into a vibrant, appealing space.
City Archipelago is a testament to the power of biophilic design in transforming urban spaces. By integrating green buildings and open spaces in a casual, dynamic manner, Zhang has created a space that is not only functional but also delightful to the senses. This project serves as a model for future urban design initiatives, demonstrating the potential of biophilic design to create sustainable, appealing urban environments.
The project has been recognized for its innovative approach to urban design, winning the Bronze A' City Planning and Urban Design Award in 2023. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving the quality of life, making the world a better place. With City Archipelago, Ning Zhang has certainly achieved these goals, offering a vision of what the future of urban design could look like.
